Wind, waves and weather

The weather in Barbados

Barbados is a beautiful tropical island blessed with north east trade winds and a constant average temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. Most days are hot and sunny and the water’s warm so I guess you could say it’s the perfect place to learn a new water sport. You’ll never need a wetsuit, although sometimes a thin neoprene layer is nice.

Wind Conditions

We have incredibly reliable conditions from Nov/Dec through to July. It’s most common to ride a 9m kite for wave riding, but lighter riders are often on 6s and 7s. This moderate to strong wind is ideal for teaching, and means we rarely have to cancel a lesson because of the conditions.

Wave Conditions

Barbados is blessed with swell all year round, although it’s best in December, January and February. If you have a car, you’ll normally find something. On the reef at Silver Sands (the main kite beach) you’ll often find 1.5 – 3m swell, and so there’s nearly always something. On a good day, it’s REALLY good.

The wind tends to be cross or cross off on the wave, and if you’re regular you’ll be riding backside.
